Power Over Water Is Its Own Discipline.

A dock is one of the few places where a wiring fault can energize the water people swim in. That is why docking facilities have their own rules in the National Electrical Code, and why residential docks are held to them too, not just marinas.

We run the feeder from the house or shoreline, land it in a weatherproof dock panel, and protect and bond the installation so a fault trips the circuit instead of finding the water.

Docks take a beating. Sun, spray, ice, and constant movement break down enclosures and terminations that were never rated for it. When we rewire a dock, we build it for that environment, not for a back porch.

Code and Safety

Why Docks Have Their Own Rules.

Docking facilities are covered by Article 555 of the National Electrical Code, and it applies to docks serving one- and two-family homes, not only commercial marinas. The headline requirement is ground-fault protection: shore power receptacles must be protected at a threshold no higher than 30 milliamperes, far tighter than ordinary equipment protection.

That number exists because of electric shock drowning. Current leaking into the water around a dock can paralyze a swimmer before anyone realizes there is a fault, and the code was tightened specifically to reduce those deaths. Bonding the metal dock structure is the other half of the answer.

Code editions are adopted locally and change over time, so we install to the edition your jurisdiction enforces and confirm the requirements before we start.

Boat Dock Wiring FAQs

Does a residential boat dock need special electrical protection?

Yes. Docking facilities fall under NEC Article 555, which applies to residential docks as well as marinas. Shore power receptacles require ground-fault protection set no higher than 30 milliamperes, and the metal dock structure must be bonded. We install to the code edition your local jurisdiction enforces.

What is electric shock drowning?

Can you add power and lighting to an existing dock?

Can you wire a boat lift?

Yes. We size and run the circuit for boat lift motors, install the required disconnect and ground-fault protection, and make sure the lift and dock framing are properly bonded.
